Back in 'Nineteen and fifty-three', in 'Home Ec' class we were given handouts recipes from Arm & Hammer and Cow Brand (Dwight's) Baking Soda. This recipe has been made so many times, the recipe sheet is totally stained, frayed on the edges, and creased in the middle.
ORANGE BREAD
2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup shortening 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon orange rind 1/2 cup orange juice 1/4 cup white (distilled) vinegar
Sift flour, soda and salt together.
Cream shortening, blend in sugar, add egg and beat until fluffy. Add grated orange rind. Add flour mixture (alternately) with orange juice and vinegar, beating well after each addition. Turn into greased 3-1/4 x 4-1/2 x 2-1/2-inch loaf pan.
Bake 1 hour or until done at 350 degrees F (moderate oven). Remove from pan and cool several hours or overnight before slicing.
