This is the only waldorf salad I ever had until I was 20 years old and saw the words "waldorf salad" on a menu at the old Drake's soda fountain in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I hadn't had it in ages and was ectastic to find it so far from home. We only had it for Christmas, Thanksgiving and birthdays.
I thought my mother's way was THE ONLY way it was made. Imagine my surprise when I chomped down on a big mouthful of apples, celery, raisins and mayonnaise instead of this:
ANNA RAE'S WALDORF SALAD
2 cups peeled diced crisp apples 1 1/2 cups halved seedless grapes 3/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (all measurements approximate. proportion to taste)
Mix thoroughly and add:
enough whipped cream or whipped cream substitute (Cool Whip) to make the mixture creamy. If you are preparing it to serve later in the day, put in just enough to moisten, then add the creaminess right before serving. May garnish with a dash of cinnamon.
