French setting is equivalent to the whole wheat setting on most machines. However for your machine, I would select the normal cycle.

Another note: I have found that if you have a crockpot, you can slow cook the wheat berries overnight on the low setting to get them really soft and puffed out. The original method also works ok, but the berries are chewier.

When adding the wheat berries to the dough at the beeps, I have also found that if you toss them in a little bit of flour first, they will incorporate into the dough better.
