Dear Folks,

I don't remember who wanted a grillable veggie burger so I am going to list it here. This recipe comes from Vegetarian Times, August 1992. I haven't tried used this recipe myself but it sounds nice.

This should give a Southwestern taste to the Burgers. Prepare the Salsa-Style Grilling Sauce first.

BARBECUE TEMPEH BURGERS

2 (8 oz.) packages of tempeh, thawed
1 C Salsa-Style Grilling Sauce or medium-hot prepared salsa *
2 C low-calorie Russian Dressing
8 whole-wheat burger buns, split
Lettuce leaves, sprouts and sliced red onion rings for garnish

Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Separate the tempeh squares. Cover a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and place the eight squares of tempeh on it. In a small bowl, combine grilling sauce or salsa and Russian dressing. Spread half the sauce liberally over the tempeh.
Bake for 30 minutes, then turn tempeh over and spread with remaining sauce. Bake 15 more minutes, and then transfer to a preheated grill. Grill 10 minutes, or until lightly browned, basting with extra sauce. Toast the buns, and then fill each with tempeh and sauce. Garnish the lettuce, sprouts and onions. Serves 8
