Gina, I'll have to look into the Silver Meteor for you. I'm not sure that it still exists. They used to name the trains, I guess (You know...Arlo Gutheries song "The City of New Orleans.") My DH and I took it from DC to Tampa, maybe...It was a long time ago...early marriage...BC (before children), as I call it. I feel like my mom & I might have gone through Philadelphis but I just can't remember. I was pretty young. To get to our part of MA, you would have to change trains and take "The Vermonter." You really should plan a trip to New England sometime if you haven't seen it. The best time is in the fall because the colors, in our part of New England are sensational during about the 2nd week of Oct. I think we had a very beautiful fall this year..very little rain so the leaves stayed on the trees for a pretty long time. In fact, it has been so dry that we actuslly have a stubborn fire in the Holyoke Range that has destroyed quite a number of acres...nothing like the fires in the west but we hate seeing the damage. We call them mountains but compared to The Rocky's, and the mountains in Oregon and Washington State, they are merely hills! I don't know whether or not you are familiar with Yankee Candle Co. but it is practically a "stone's throw" from where I live. The poet, Emily Dickinson's home is in the town where I live. In, I guess, late Feb. and March, you can go to sugar shacks. Many serve pancake breakfasts on the weekends and still boil their sap, making their maple syrup over wood burning fires. Quaint, is probably the best way to describe this part of the country. Of course Boston, which is about a 2 hour drive from here is quite different from here...more cosmopolitan. At any rate, most of New England is pretty historical and there are a lot of things to do just about any time of the year. |
