Old Fashioned Spice Cookies
2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons water
2 cups quick or old fashioned oats, uncooked
3/4 cup currants
Combine flour, salt, soda and spices in large bowl. Add shortening,
sugars, egg and water. Beat about 2 minutes or until smooth. Stir in
oats and currants.
Roll dough out to 1/8-inch thickness on surface lightly sprinkled with
confectioners sugar. Cut with floured 3-inch round cutter. Place on
ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with granulated sugar. Bake in
preheated moderate oven (375'F.) 8 to 10 minutes.
Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
