So--

Q. When you see a "V" of ducks flying, why is one side always longer than the
other?

A. There are more ducks on that side.

Spent a weekend getting my only child graduated from Iowa State University. It
was a wonderful "Mom Moment." Stayed at a lovely B&B out in the country, on a
strawberry farm. It was in an 1871 farmhouse/coach house owned by a lovely,
freshly retired couple, Virginia and John Whitaker. Sunday morning Virginia
served the french toast recipe from the Santa Fe Railroad dining cars. We had
the french toast, wonderful little round pork sausages, sliced bananas with
chocolate sauce and wonderful tea.

I came home and research the recipe out of The American Country Inns and B&B
Cookbook, by Kitty and Lucian Maynard (1987). I think this is a very close
match:

D.J.'s French Toast
From The Nauset House Inn, in East Orleans, Mass.

1 loaf Italian bread
4 eggs
2 cups milk
2 Tbl. vanilla extract
1 tsp. nutmeg

Cut bread into one-inch thick slices. Place on a greased jelly roll pan. Mix
all other ingredients well and pour over the bread slices. Let stand until all
the egg mixture has been absorbed, turning slices a few times. Fry in corn oil
over medium heat until golden brown on both sides.

I cried three times at the college graduation:

1. A tall grad loped in carrying his toddler daughter in his arms.

2. The dean said, "To all you parents who stood behind these students:
Congratulations. You just passed."

3. When they were all done, and the kids all stood up en masse and threw their
mortarboards in the air.

It was one great day to be a mommy!
