Kalamata are ripe olives. These are big green olives with the pits in still. They are smashed with a mallet to crack them. They may be Sicilian style. I will see if I can find out when I go to my market here. All of the Italian markets seem like they have this same type of olive. I forgot that I also like to add a little oregano and basil to the salad.
