Old-fashioned Butter Rolls

1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 cup water
1/4 lb. melted butter
2 cups sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 cups milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Cut shortening into flour and salt. Add water and mix well. Roll out on floured dough board 1/8 inch thick and brush with melted butter. Sprinkle with 1 cup sugar and the cinnamon. Roll up jellyroll fashion and cut into 1 1/2-inch slices. Place in greased baking dish. Bake at 370 degrees for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, cook milk and other cup of sugar over low heat for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Pour over rolls; bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Watch carefully, as sauce will cook away.
