APPLE ROLLS
FOR THE SYRUP: 1 1/2 cups sugar 3 cups water FOR THE ROLLS: 2 cups flour 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons Crisco vegetable shortening 1 egg, beaten 1/2 cup milk 4 medium-size apples, peeled, cored, chopped fine cream (to serve)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Put 1 1/2 cups sugar and 3 cups water in a baking pan and cook slowly on top of stove while making dough.
Sift together flour, the 2 tablespoons sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in Crisco, milk, and egg.
Roll out to 1/2-inch thick. Spread with chopped apples. Roll up as for a jelly roll. Cut in slices. Place cut side down in hot syrup.
Bake in 400 degree oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with cream.
APPLE ROLLS II
FOR THE SYRUP: 2 cups water 2 cups brown sugar 1/4 cup butter FOR THE ROLLS: 2 cups flour 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 2/3 cup shortening 1/2 cup milk FOR THE FILLING: 6 medium-size apples, peeled, cored. thinly sliced 1/2 cup sugar Cinnamon, optional
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Heat syrup ingredients until melted or bring to a boil and take off heat.
Mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Add shortening and mix well; add milk.
Roll out dough. Put apples on top sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on top then roll up (like a jelly roll) and cut in slices, put in large greased baking pan. Pour syrup over.
Bake at 375 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes.
Serve with milk or ice cream.
