OLD-FASHIONED DATE AND NUT BREAD
2 1/2 cups sifted all- purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon Arm & Hammer Brand or Cow Brand Baking Soda 1 cup nut meats 1/4 cup shortening 2 tablespoons vinegar and boiling water to make 1 1/2 cups 1 cup pitted dates, cut in halves 1 egg, beaten 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
Sift flour, salt, and soda together and mix in nut meats, broken.
Add shortening to combined vinegar and boiling water. Pour over dates and let stand 10 minutes.
Combine egg and brown sugar. Add dry ingredients to egg mixture alternately with date and liquid mixture. Turn into greased 9 1/2x5x3inch loaf pan.
Bake at 350 degrees F. (moderate oven) about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
