My mother made a beef stew that only my family seemed to eat. I was born in 1956 and it is the only version of stew we ever made. It was beef cubes in broth with potatoes, celery and onions. Salt and pepper and a couple bay leaves cooked until tender. Then a slurry of flour and a good amount of apple cider vinegar was mixed then added to the bubbling broth to thicken and flavor. She always served this with buttered peas, cole slaw and rolls. Does anyone know this stew? Where did it come from? I make it and everyone loves it but admit they've never heard of the combination or tasted anything like it before. This is driving me crazy.
There is also soft choc. cookie from a 1930's cookbook that included nuts and candied fruit that I've almost duplicated. Sound familiar?
