This is an old family recipe given to us many years ago by my Aunt Fern. I hope you enjoy them as much as our family has.

German Hethersand Cookies
Fern Kent

2 cups butter - browned well
2 1/2 cups sugar
2 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
6 cups flour (start with 3 cups)

Brown butter well in skillet. Let it boil up twice to a golden brown. Pour into mixing bowl and add sugar. Let stand to cool. Add vanilla and 3 cups flour, mixed with salt & baking powder. Place on lightly floured bread board. Add more flour as needed to make a firm dough. Mix well & thoroughly knead dough.

Form into walnut size balls, or roll 1/8" thick and cut with cookie cutters. Bake on greased cookie sheet in 375 degree oven, and bake until just set. (Don't let them get too brown).

Store in air-tight container.
