BENNE SEED BISCUITS
1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp sesame seeds, divided use 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for rolling) 1 tbsp baking powder 3/4 tsp salt 1/4 cup shortening 3/4 cup milk
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
Place 1/2 cup sesame seeds in a heavy skillet; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until lightly browned.
Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and toasted seeds in a large mixing bowl; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Add milk; stir well.
Turn dough out on a floured surface; knead lightly 10-12 times. Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness; cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter. Sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon sesame seeds over biscuit tops, pressing in slightly. Place on ungreased baking sheet.
Bake at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes.
