I'm guessing here : could it be a steamed pudding?
I made this recipe years ago :

Steamed chocolate pudding (use English measures throughout)

2 1/2 English tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons sugar
1 egg
few drops vanilla
3/4 cup plain flour
1 level teasp baking poweder
pinch salt
1 tablesp cocoa

Pour into greased pudding basin with lid and place in large saucepan with water up to 1/2 way and steam for 2 hours adding more water if it evaporates too much. Serve with boiled custard or sweet white sauce.
