I can imagine this could make quite a bit of smoke if, as she suggests, the oven isn't clean of any spills or spatters. Keeping some water (not touching the bird) in the bottom of the pan might help prevent some of the smoke from sizzling drippings. If you have pet birds or any small critters that might be harmed by the fumes you might want to move them to a closed room away from the kitchen before you begin!
