Hi Mike, This is from my Italian Grandmother :)
FRIED DOUGH
1 cups lukewarm water 11/2 pkgs. fast rising yeast 1/2 teaspoon sugar 11/4-11/2 lbs. flour 2 tablespoons cup vegetable oil powdered sugar or honey
Put 1 cup of lukewarm water in small bowl. Add 11/2 packages of fast rising yeast and 1/2 teaspoon sugar. Allow to bubble.
In large bowl, place 11/4-11/2 lbs flour; make a hole in the center and add 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Add bubbling yeast mixture. Squeeze dough together until mixed well, adding warm water if needed to mix in all flour.
Add flour, punch and fold until dough is no longer sticky. Knead approximately 5 minutes. Put a small amount of oil in bottom of bowl and roll dough to coat lightly with oil.
Roll dough into a ball and cover with towel for approximately 10 minutes (in warm place)
Fold and punch dough down, roll back into ball, cover and let double in size.
Pinch off little pieces and roll into little balls, take each ball, stretch it a little and dip in deep fried oil.
Keep in deep fried oil until it turns to a brown coat. Take out, place on a plate with paper towel to blot extra oil off. Let it cool for a few minutes.
Top with powdered sugar or honey. Ready to serve.
Note: You can turn this dessert into an appetizer by stuffing each dough ball with anchovies before deep frying it.
