Hi Bety ~ I make homemade soups often. Canned chicken stock works well, including for potato soup. I suspect the "chicken base" is another wording for "chicken stock."
You can find chicken stock in your grocery SOUP section in cans or in rectangular paper/wax cartons. If you want your stock to be more flavorful (with less water) than it is in the canned form, you can steam it uncovered for a while to "cook it down."
You could also buy the powdered squares of chicken bouillon to use for a chicken base. However, some bouillon brands have more salt than the canned. Also, some contain MSG. You might want to avoid those that contain MSG. Many people (including myself) are allergic to MSG.
