Mary's Enchilada Sauce

4 tablespoons shortening
2 tablespoons flour
20 ounces tomato sauce puree
4 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder or more to taste

Brown the flour in shortening. Add the tomato sauce, chili powder, salt and garlic powder. Cook about 15 minutes at simmer. Add water if too thick. Sauce is enough for about 24 tortillas.
