Football Team Biscuits
alt.sports.football.pro.pitt-steelers/New Mexico Mike (2001)

This is my lucky Steeler recipe. I got it from an octogenarian Southern lady on Mississippi's Gulf Coast (well, Natchez), so it must be legit. I add grated cheddar when we play orange teams (CIN, the "browns"), cut 'em into star shapes for Dallas, green food coloring for the Eagles (though that didn't go too well), et cetera.

The biscuits represent the opposition. You are "eating" the opponent, just like the Steelers on the field. WARNING: If the game is going down in the first half, your consumption can still work, but you could carbo-load and fall asleep in the 2nd half! Enjoy!

2 cups all purpose flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
5 TBSP vegetable shortening*
3/4 to 1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 450.

Mix all dry ingredients and sift.
Add shortening and cut in with a pastry cutter until it has the consistency of coarse meal. (If adding grated cheddar cheese (about 1/2 cup) do it at this point in the prep).
Add milk and stir until it forms a ball.

Place on a floured board and roll out to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter.

Place on an ungreased baking sheet and bake for about 15 minutes.

* I sometimes replace the shortening with 3 TBSP butter, cut into small cubes plus 2 TBSP cold bacon fat for flavor. Goes especially well if you're adding cheese.
