Harmer's Green Beans

Recipe from Harmer's Cafe in Edgerton, Platte County, Kansas.
Makes 6 servings

3 strips bacon
2 cans undrained cut green beans (16 oz. each)
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 onion -- chopped
1/2 cup water -- or as needed

In a skillet over medium heat, fry bacon until crisp. Drain bacon, reserving drippings; crumble bacon.

Combine beans, brown sugar, onion, crisp bacon and reserved bacon drippings in a saucepan. Add water, as needed, to cover beans. Heat to boiling; reduce heat, cover and simmer about 1 1/2 hours. (Cook slowly and add additional water if needed.)
