Festive Treats

This makes 48 bars

This recipe comes from a Nestle's Butterscotch package. I have been making it for 15 years and got it from my mother who has been making it for about 25. It looks a little complicated but isn't really and everyone likes them. It's my favorite and I wouldn't consider it a proper Christmas holiday without them.

*Cookie Base*

Combine in bowl and beat till creamy:
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup soft butter
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
Sift together and stir into above: (I don't sift)
1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt

Spread in ungreased 13x9x2-inch pan and bake in a pre-heated 350F oven for 15 minutes.

*Topping*

Combine and beat till thick:
1 egg
2 tbsp brown sugar

blend in:
2 tbsp milk
1 tbsp melted butter

Sift together and stir into above: (again, I don't sift)
1/3 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt

Spoon the topping over warm cookie base and top with the following mixture:

1 6 oz pkg (1 cup) Butterscotch Morsels
3/4 cup mixed candied fruits
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Bake again at 350F for 15 minutes. Let it cool totally and cut in 2x1-inch bars.
