The recipe in the bake-off cookbook says" Don't scrimp on the nuts or it won't work" Could that have been the problem? It also says"Since this cake has a soft filling, an ordinary doneness test cannot be used. Accurate oven temperature and baking times are essential." I think we all tend to keep baking if that toothpick doesn't come out clean, but in this case that's apparently the critical part.
