This was my Grandma's recipe and has been in the family for over 70 years. We still make it and I am often asked for the recipe. I couldn't begin to say how many bottles I give away every year. Enjoy! Judy
GRANDMA JAMES' FRUIT CHUTNEY
12 Tomatoes, peeled, drained and chopped
2 large green peppers, chopped
1 cup onion, chopped (about 4)
1 cup peaches, chopped (about 4)
1 cup pears, chopped (about 4)
1 cup apples, chopped (about 4)
1/2 cup pickling spices in a bag (I add 4-6 sm. round dried hot peppers to the bag)
3 tablespoons coarse salt
3 cups white sugar
1 cup vinegar
Put everything but the sugar and vinegar in a large pot. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a slow boil and cook for about 2 hours until thick.
Add the sugar and keep the slow boil for 1 hour.
Add the vinegar and slow boil another 1/2 hour. Stir often.
Bottle and seal. Store in refrigerator.
For longer storage, process in a hot water bath.
