Recipe: Easy Shaved Ice with Homemade Syrups (orange, raspberry, lemon and cotton candy)

"Cool down with a frosty blast from the past that uses five or less ingredients. Top shaved ice with homemade syrups in inventive flavor combinations. Arrange a DIY shaved ice station at your next summer gathering for a sure-fire crowd pleaser. Fill a large vessel with shaved ice and set out squeeze bottles filled with different flavored syrups so guests can mix and match to their heart's content."
FOR THE SIMPLE SYRUP:
2 cups sugar
1 cup water
FLAVOR SELECTIONS:
FOR ORANGE SHAVED ICE:
1 teaspoon McCormick Pure Orange Extract
8 drops McCormick Yellow Food Color
2 drops McCormick Red Food Color
FOR BLUE RASPBERRY SHAVED ICE:
2 teaspoons McCormick Raspberry Extract
10 drops Blue McCormick Assorted Food Colors & Egg Dye
FOR LEMON BLAST SHAVED ICE:
1 teaspoon McCormick Pure Lemon Extract
10 drops McCormick Yellow Food Color
FOR STRAWBERRY COTTON CANDY SHAVED ICE:
2 teaspoons McCormick Imitation Strawberry Extract
10 drops McCormick Red Food Color
FOR SERVING:
Shaved ice*
To make the simple syrup, bring sugar and water to boil in small saucepan on medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Boil 1 minute. Remove from heat.
TO FLAVOR THE SYRUP:
Stir in extract and food color(s). Cool to room temperature. Pour into squeeze bottle for easier serving.
TO SERVE:
Pour syrup over shaved ice.
*If you don't have a shaved ice maker, crush ice to a snowy texture in your blender or by wrapping a plastic bag of ice in a kitchen towel and smashing it with a rolling pin or mallet. This can be a fun project for kids so long as they have adult supervision.
Makes 16 servings
