Hi Chris,

I hope this comes close:

Date Cake (1950's Era Recipe)
Newsgroups: rec.food.recipes/Andrea Hicks

1 1/2 cups chopped pitted dates
1 cup boiling water
1/2 shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Combine dates and boiling water; cool to room temperature. Cream shortening and sugar till light. Add egg and vanilla; beat well. Stir together thoroughly flour, soda, and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with date mixture, beating after each addition. Stir in nuts.Bake in greased and lightly floured 13 x9x2 inch baking pan at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. If desired, serve with dollops of whipped cream.

And here are two recipes I found for Cinnamon Sauce (one with flour, one with cornstarch)

Cinnamon Sauce 1
Source: Cookbook USA

3-4 tbsp. butter
6-8 tbsp. flour
1-2 tsp. cinnamon
1 qt. water
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Melt butter in large saucepan.
Add flour and cinnamon to make a paste.
Gradually add water, stirring constantly.
Add sugar; heat until thick.
Remove from heat and add vanilla. Cool.
Serve over spice cake, ice cream or alone.

Cinnamon Sauce 2

1/2 cup sugar
1 tbsp. cornstarch
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 cup water
2 tbsp. butter or margarine

Combine sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon.
Add water. Stir until smooth.
Cook to a boil. Boil 1 minute.
Blend in butter. Serve warm.

Happy Baking,

Betsy
