Karen, ny
I am searching for a recipe for a cake that looks like a bbq grill. I know I seen a picture of it somewhere on the internet and can't seem to find it. We are having a labor day picnic and I thought that would be a great dessert, plus conversation dessert :) If anyone could help I would appreciate it. Thanks

Karen: I have not seen the recipe you referenced, but I have a few ideas to pass on. I would recommend you made a rectangular sheet cake. I posted a recipe below for an awesome chocolate cake. I would leave the cake in the cake pan as part of the bbq. Frost the cake with the frosting listed with this recipe.

I think you could make your "charcoal" briquettes by pressing large marshmallows in finely crushed chocolate cookies.

Crushed "red hots" could be sprinkled among the charcoal bits to give the illusion of heat.

Licorice sticks (or whips) could then be used to fashion the grill part of your BBQ.

You could even garnish your cake with "hamburger cookies." These "hamburgers" are made with cookies, etc. and look like minature hamburgers. The recipe for those was previously posted on TKL. I will look for it after I finish this posting.

Karen, if you find the one you saw on the internet I would love to see it. Hope this helps for now. Enjoy your picnic!

THE BEST CHOCOLATE CAKE with Frosting

2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 stick butter
1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1/2 cup butter-flavored Crisco shortening (solid)
4 heaping Tablespoons cocoa
1 cup water
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla

Frosting:
1 stick butter
4 heaping Tablespoons cocoa
6 to 8 Tablespoons milk
3/4 box powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Ingredients must be
mixed in proper order for best results.

Cake: Sift flour, sugar, and salt together. Set aside. In a saucepan, mix butter, Crisco, water, and cocoa.
Heat until it almost boils. Pour over dry ingredients.
Beat well by hand. Add soda and buttermilk and beat gently only to mix. Add eggs and vanilla last. Mix gently. Pour into 9 x 13 inch greased and floured pan.
Bake for 20 minutes only. 10 minutes into baking
time,start to make frosting.

Frosting: Mix ingredients together in microwavable
bowl. Heat in microwave until warm only. Pour over
cake immediately after removing cake from oven.

"Hamburger" Cookies

One box of Vanilla wafers
One box of Chocolate Mint Cookies
One tube of Yellow Frosting
One tube of Red Frosting
Shredded Coconut tinted light green
One egg white
Sesame Seeds

Take one vanilla wafer (with rounded side on bottom) and put the mint cookie on top and then along the edge put some of the Yellow Frosting (mustard) and then on top of the yellow put some red frosting (ketchup). Put some of the green-tinted coconut on next. Place another vanilla wafer on top (round side on top). Brush with a little egg white and sprinkle
with sesame seeds.

Note: If using these to garnish a cake, I would be tempted to place the top "bun" slightly off the top of the entire burger to show off your other ingredients (mustard, ketchup and lettuce).

I found this recipe at the Hershey's website. There is a picture there too.

Chocolate Barbecue Grill Cake

1 cup water
1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine
1/2 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
2 cups sugar
1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
3/4 cup dairy sour cream
2/3 cup REESE'S Peanut Butter Chips
1 teaspoon shortening (do not use butter, margarine, spread or oil)
COCOA FUDGE " BURGERS" (recipe follows), optional
JOLLY JELLIES Sweet and Fruity Candies (optional)
Directions:

1. Heat oven to 350F. Line 13x9x2-inch baking pan with aluminum foil; grease and flour sides and bottom.

2. Place water, butter and cocoa in medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture boils; boil 1 minute. Remove from heat; set aside.

3. Stir together sugar, flour, baking soda and salt in large bowl. Add eggs, sour cream and cocoa mixture; beat just until blended (batter will be thin). Pour into prepared pan.

4. Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool cake completely in pan on wire rack. Carefully invert cake onto serving tray; peel off foil.

5. Place peanut butter chips and shortening in small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at HIGH (100%) 30 to 45 seconds or until mixture is melted when stirred. Place mixture in recloseable small plastic bag; cut off tiny section of corner. Squeeze mixture onto cake, forming grids like top of grill: allow to firm up before cutting. Top with "burgers" and "shish kabobs", if desired. 15 servings.

COCOA FUDGE "BURGERS": Beat 1/4 cup softened butter or margarine in medium bowl; add 2 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa, 2 tablespoons milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat until all ingredients are moistened and consistency to form patties; add additional milk or powdered sugar, if necessary, to get proper consistency. Form "patties" place on top of cake.

"SHISH-KABOBS": Place red, green, and tan colored jelly candies on plastic decorative skewers to form shish-kabobs, if desired. Place on top of cake.
