Bread machine info

Misc.

Besides Consumers Reports - you might check this site -

The Village Bakery - http://countrylife.net/bread --- you will have to do a bit (lot?) of scrolling around - but the 2 sections I suggest you go to are 'bread forum' and 'questions and answers'. There is also a 'bread digest' -- but I can't find the url right now .... tho it should be available on the 'bread forum'. In the digest, they have rated several machines. In the 'bread forum' users give their comments pro and con. And somewhere in there ... they suggest that before buying a machine one should think about how it will be used. 1. Do you need a horizontal loaf - or will the vertical do?; 2. Will you be making most of your bread completely in the machine - or using it mainly for 'dough/manual' cycle; 3. If you're doing a lot of whole wheat, etc. type breads be sure to get one that does those well. 4. Check the dimensions of the machine - some might not open well on some of the older kitchen cabinets that are lower; 5. check the kneading blade or paddle -- some are being made out of plastic ...and they say they are not as strong. And so on .....

I'm getting ready to buy a new one (for my daughter-in-law) and probably will be replacing my 4 year old one (it's used several times a week) in a few months. So it's fun to see and read about the new features. Personally, I'm not interested in making jam or butter. I have a 'quick' bread cycle on mine .... but really prefer making those the 'old' way. To each his own.
