Controlling animals in the garden

Cats HATE mothballs in the garden! Don't know how it works with dogs. Also, I have squirrel problems, and it takes them a couple times of digging before they realize how much they dislike a liberal sprinkling of crushed RED pepper on top of the garden. Perhaps the red pepper would discourage cats and dogs too.
