re: cloudy oil

Misc.

Hi Katt,

Usually when someone posts an 'is it safe to eat' question my answer is to throw the food away. We wouldn't want to take even an educated guess and be wrong! Here is info from the National Food Safety Database that may help you with your decision:

Oil, cloudy
When oil is stored in the refrigerator (to prolong shelf life), it might become cloudy and appear to have a sediment in it. This is because some of the saturated fats become solid when exposed to refrigeration temperatures. The oil will become clear again when warmed to room temperature.

Olive Oil
Olive oil is the oil pressed from fully ripe black olives. "Extra virgin" and "virgin" olive oil are obtained from the first pressings; refined olive oil is derived from additional pressings of the fruit and is then filtered to remove impurities. Olive oil can be used as a salad or cooking oil. When used as a cooking oil, it imparts a distinctive flavor and so must be used with caution. Store unopened containers of olive oil for six months in the pantry. After opening, it can be stored for one to three months in the pantry.

Happy Cooking,

Betsy
