Dear Diane,

If this is the recipe you're referring to:

Best-Ever Orange Cake (McCall's)

According to the instructions, the yolks get combined with 1 cup of the sugar and then the flour mixture. Then, the beaten egg white mixture (that was set aside at the beginning) is folded into that mixture.
