Recipe: Chewy Chocolates (turtle candy with dates, Baker's Coconut recipe, 1980's)

3/4 cup (about) pecan halves
12 dates, cut in half
1/2 pound soft caramels
2 tbsp. heavy (whipping) cream
4 squares (1 ounce each) Baker's semi-sweet chocolate, melted and slightly cooled
Place 2 pecan halves and a date half in clusters on lightly buttered baking sheets; set aside.
Melt caramels in cream in saucepan over very low heat stirring constantly until smooth. Spoon caramel mixture over clusters, leaving ends uncovered. Let stand until set, about 30 minutes.
Spread chocolate over caramel mixture.
Makes about 2 dozen candies
