Recipe: Peg Bracken's Spice Cookies (I Hate to Cook Cookbook, 1960)

SPICE COOKIES

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg, unbeaten
1/4 cup molasses
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoons ground cloves
3/4 teaspoons ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a cookie sheet.

Mix together the shortening, sugar, egg and molasses; set aside.

Then sift together the remaining ingredients. Now mix it all together, and form it into walnut-sized balls. Put them two inches apart on a greased cookie sheet.

Bake at 375 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes.
