Recipe: Skillet Meatloaf (French's recipe, 1960's)

SKILLET MEATLOAF



1 envelope French's Mushroom Gravy Mix*
1 cup water
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup bread crumbs
1 tablespoon French's Minced Onion
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon oil or shortening
1/4 cup tomato juice or water
2 slices American cheese, if desired

Combine mushroom gravy mix and 1 cup water in a saucepan; bring to a boil.

In a large plastic bag or bowl, thoroughly mix ground beef, bread crumbs, onion, egg, salt, and 1/4 cup of the prepared gravy. Shape into 2 loaves.

Brown on both sides in a large skillet in oil. Cover; cook over low heat for about 20 minutes.

Remove cover and spoon off excess fat. Add tomato juice or water to remaining gravy. Pour over meatloaves. Top with cheese, cut into triangles, if using. Cook 10 minutes, uncovered.

*If preferred, us French's Brown Gravy Mix or Onion Gravy Mix.

Makes 6 servings
