ISO: bougainvillia

I planted a bougainvillia this year that is coming along beautifully. I am concerned that it might not do well during the winter here in Zone 9 and was wondering how to properly protect it. I was told to cut it down and place a bucket over it, but before I try that I'd like some other opinions. Thank you in advance.
