ISO: How to make caramel from condensed..

Misc.

I am looking for the method to turn condensed milk into caramel. My mum used to put the whole can in a saucepan of water and boil it on the stove for some time, but every now and then the can would explode and we would end up with caramel all over the place. What a sticky situation!!! Anyway, I would like to know how to do it, both boiling the can, for how long and I can also buy the condensed milk in a carton, how do you make the caramel that way??
