ISO: what to do/fresh artichokes?

Misc.

My mother just picked up a box of 24 artichokes at an auction for about $2-$3 and now, of course she needs to know what to do with them. I still remember the great response I got when I asked about fennel/anise. I'm now asking you all for help with simple instructions on how to cook artichoke as a simple vegetable, not stuffed. Can you freeze them, and how might also be helpful as I'm sure my parents won't be eating them fast enough...not 24 of them. Mom is quite brave to buy these veggies no one else knows what to do with...and she knows I'll help her by getting some info.
