Thank you, Barbara (I like your name)!

Yes, I see that removing the paddle is the best answer to my question. And, just finishing it outside the bread machine is a much better way to get the loaf to bake without that hole! I have an old machine, actually, and I wish it had a straight paddle. If I get another machine, I will get one that allows the paddle to be removed BEFORE finishing the job or has a straight one. I appreciate your answer so much. You and Betsy have been very helpful to me. Barbara in Phoenix.
