I am looking for the bran muffin recipe that was on the Nabisco Bran Cereal box many years ago.
Virginia, VA
Better Bran Muffins (from box of Nabisco 100% Bran Cereal)

This was my mother's favorite bran muffin recipe.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
-----------------
1 1/4 cups Nabisco 100% Bran Cereal
1 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cup vegetable oil

Blend first five ingredients; set aside. Stir together cereal and milk until bran is moistened; let stand 5 minutes. Add egg and oil, beating untril blended. Add flour mixture, stirring just until combined; do not overmix. Fill greased muffin pan cups 2/3 full. Bake in a preheated hot oven (400º F.) about 20 minutes or until done.

Yield: 12-14 regular-sized muffins.
Enjoy!

1 egg added to ingredient list 6-19-2002

Thank you to Virginia for the recipe. I tried several places to no avail. My kids loved this growing up and I am now making a cookbook of their favorites for them Thanks again. K.T.

for the Bran Muffins recipe. I, too, have made a recipe collection, but these were for me & my 3 brothers & their wives & offspring, and they consisted of recipes our mother used over the years. So I can appreciate your collecting "favorites." Glad I could help.

Hi Virginia, I am looking forward to trying the muffin recipe you posted. The ingredient list does not include eggs, but they are listed in the method. Is it one egg?

Thanks!

Oops, somehow did not include--don't have source now, but it MUST be 1 egg--sorry about that!

Hi there --

I would like to make my grandmother's bran muffins recipe that I ate as a child. The recipe calls for Nabisco 100% Bran cereal, but I can't find it anywhere in stores (I live on the West Coast). Does anyone know of what could replace this ingredient?

Thank you --

Hi Sarah,

If you can find Fiber One cereal that should be a good substitute for 100% Bran cereal. I think Bran Buds is another cereal that's similar. The cereal will bread down in the batter so the actual shape of it won't matter. Bran flakes may even work.

I hope that's a help.

I have made a wonderful bran muffin for 30 years with 100% Nabisco bran and Kellog's All Bran and can't find the 100% bran anywhere and the muffins aren't the same. Everyone loves them, especially the children!

Sarah,

Concerning the Nabisco bran cereal that we both are searching for, below is the info I have discovered.

Post, owned by Kraft, bought out Nabisco in the mid 90's. I called Kraft today and they said they have discontinued as of last year, the Post 100% bran, which is the same as Nabisco 100% bran. They could offer no substitute. My muffins just aren't the same--I used it in combination with Kellog's Original All Bran. Everyone loved them. Did your recipe use the two cereals, if so, have you found a substitute?

Has anyone tried a substitute in this recipe for the Nabisco 100% Bran Cereal? I really wanted to make these today, and went to 3 grocery stores before it finally dawned that they don't make this anymore. Now I'm stumped as to what to use.

I too have been searching for a replacement for nabisco 1005 bran I fianlly bought kellogs all bran Xtra fiber and am using as a sub for nabisco I also use the regular kellogs all bran in the recipe too. The xtra fiber looks just like the nabiscoe we will see if it is the same or not it was my grandmothers recipe and also uses buttermilk I wonder if its the same recipe it makes about 6 dozen muffins (she had 10 kids) have you tried the fiber one?

Nabisco sold to Post, so it is now Post 100% Bran Cereal.

I tried Fiber One cereal and it did not break down after soaking in the milk. I even put it through the blender! The muffins were as if made with white flour only. I also tried Kelloggs All Bran and they were not as good as the Nabisco...my next try will be bran flakes. I think the bran must break down thoroughly to make good muffins. Not having Nabisco is a tragedy!...many of us remember those wonderful bran muffins our mothers and grandmothers made and want to continue the tradition!

That is funny I just logged on to see if I could find out where to get this cerel also. Than I came across your post.
I haven't been able to find this 100% bran anywhere either. I wanted to make some muffins also. I haven't made in quite some time. I got the recipe from my sister inlaw. They have prunes, and another bran cerel in it also. I am on a diet, not just to lose weight but to eat healthy. I thought these would be perfect in the morning. I think I am going to use Uncle Sams instead.
Let me know if you find any.
Thanks Patti

The recipe I used had two different cereals. It was a large batch of muffins. You can keep the dough in the refrig. and cook as needed, (wanted to have warm muffins every moren.) The other cereal was Kelloggs All Bran, or 40% Bran Flakes. So it was 2 cups of Nabisco 100% and than 4 cups of the All Bran, or 40% Bran. So maybe just use both of these. I don't know. Have you tried anything else. Let me know.

Thanks Patti

I have just spent the morning looking for Nabisco 100% bran inorder to make the bran muffins I used to make for my children. I will look for Post, but appears from other replies I may not be able to find that either. I'm totally frustrated!

My son has solved the issue with Nabisco 100% Bran. You can't buy it any more, but Kellogg's All Bran "Bran Buds" are the replacement. Here is the muffin recipe using the two cereals. The recipe was cut down from 6 doz. to 3 doz.

BRAN MUFFINS
(Nabisco 100% Bran Muffins with bran substitute)
Makes 3 dozen

2 cups Kellogg's All Bran "Original"

1 cup Kellogg's All Bran "Bran Buds"
(Nabisco 100% Bran was bought by Kraft Foods, so the box was re-labeled Post 100% Bran, the product was discontinued June of 2006, which Shane W. confirmed by calling and emailing Kraft on 10/2/08)
(Suitable Substitute is Kellogg's All Bran Bran Buds)

1 cup boiling water
2 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoons salt
2 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees F.

Measure the cereal into a medium mixing bowl. Pour boiling water over the cereal, add buttermilk. Let cool a few minutes.

Cream the butter and sugar together and beat eggs in one at a time. Add to the cooled cereal mixture.

Sift the flour with the baking soda and salt and stir into the cereal/sugar mixture only to dampen. Spoon into greased or paper-lined muffin tins until 1/2 full.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes at 375 degrees F.

Store remaining batter in the refrigerator for up to one week.

I too have been frustrated trying to make the 2 bran muffin recipe that has Kellogg's All Bran and Nabisco/Post 100% Bran and buttermilk because YOU CAN"T FIND THE NABISCO/POST product! So, I just made the recipe with the Kellogg's All Bran and the Kellogg's Bran Buds. I was not impressed. The replacement did not break down and create the dark color that the Nabisco did. The batter and muffin taste far more "shallow" than it's predecesor.

We need the Nabisco/Post product back for these muffins to be what they are supposed to be: the best bran muffins ever. :(

I searched online this morning and found a new cereal made by Nature’s Path called Smart Bran. It is all organic so it looks like you may have to buy it at a health food store. The Nabisco/Post cereal had a very simple ingredient list and this new Smart Bran cereal does as well. Perhaps it will work as a suitable substitute. I have not tried it yet but I hope to sometime soon.

I reached this message board with the bran question to find many of you had done the research thank you all. I also grabbed my mom's recipe and wanted to make it today and of course couldn't locate the product. thanks again

I have also been looking for the 100% bran cereal for muffins. I now use bran flakes and use prune juice for the liquid, since that's how Post !00% bran was sweetened and hence the different flavor. Not exactly like the original, but very close. I also use wheat flour instead of white.

i made these muffins so many times. i have been looking for 100% bran to no avail. i still have the recipe box with me for over 10 years. (fiber one) nothing to compare with 100% bran. fiber one makes cardboard muffins.

Yes, my recipe calls for both All-Bran and Nabisco Bran, and I have not found anything to replace the Nabisco Bran.

After a LONG search for that much-requested Nabisco 100% Bran for the great Bran Muffin recipe which uses All Bran and calls for 100% Bran, I have found a substitute that works wonderfully. Although it is an oat product, not a wheat product ~ the muffins are extremely tasty and have a great texture.

Oat Bran (All Natural Hot Cereal) by Hodgson Mill

It's a great product with no additives.

Thank you for the recipe with a substitute for the 100% Bran Cereal. I bought a box yesterday so it is on the shelves here again.
MS Richmond, VA
What brand was the 100% bran cereal you bought? Have you tried it in the muffin mix yet? Has anyone else found a substitute that works? It's the best muffin recipe ever, moist and rich and I hate to lose it. I wonder if Post knows there are this many people looking for that cereal.
