keeping lettuce fresh

i do this with romaine lettuce--probably works with other types. put lettuce root end down in tall glass or plastic container with an inch or two of water in the bottom. cover loosely with plastic (you need a bit of air circulation)& keep in fridge. if the lettuce is really fresh to begin with it will keep for 2-3 weeks.
