What a canner has that a normal pot doesn't is the rack that sits inside, that hold the jars upright, not touching each other, and keeps them off the bottom of the pot. The glass jars might break otherwise. If you have some kind of a rack that would fit inside a pot you already have, you might want to try it. But water bath canners are pretty cheap. If you think you will be doing any more canning, you may want to check them out. They come in a few sizes. I think it would make things easier for you. And I've seen them at garage sales for a couple of dollars, so that might be an option, too, to at least see how much canning you would end up doing and how well you liked it.
