Recipe: Green Apple Squares (using diced apple and nuts)

GREEN APPLE SQUARES

1/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
3 cups finely diced peeled and cored apple (Granny Smith or other)
1/4 cup nuts, chopped
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8-inch square pan.

In large bowl cream shortening and sugar; add egg. Stir in apples, nuts, and vanilla.

Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to shortening mixture. Pour into prepared pan.

Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees F. Cool in pan and cut into squares.

Makes 2 dozen
