Recipe(tried): Brown Beauty Cake and Frosting (Woman's Day, 1970's)

BROWN BEAUTY CAKE

1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate pieces
1/3 cup butterscotch pieces
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup soft shortening
1 1/4 cups sugar
3 eggs
2 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
Brown Beauty Frosting (recipe follows)

Combine chocolate and butterscotch pieces with water; heat until melted. Cool.

Beat shortening and sugar until creamy. Beat in eggs one at a time. Blend in chocolate butterscotch mixture.

Sift dry ingredients; add alternately to batter with buttermilk. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9 inch round or square cake pans.

Bake at 375 degrees F for 25 minutes. Remove from pans. When cold, spread with frosting.

BROWN BEAUTY FROSTING

1 (6 oz.) package semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 (6 oz.) package butterscotch chips
1/2 cup strong coffee
3 cups confectioners' sugar

Melt chocolate and butterscotch chips over hot water or in microwave. Remove from heat and stir in coffee and sugar, beating until smooth.

Makes one 2-layer cake.
