I've had little trouble with bugs in my small apartment herb garden. But...I once had a bunch of black caterpillars that almost stripped my bee balm and a few others to the ground. I added about 1 teaspoon cayenne and 1 teaspoon garlic powder to a spice jar with a shaker top and filled it with water. I just sprinkled the plants once and the caterpillars disappeared. The mixture stopped up a spray bottle. This would only work on a very small garden.
