I would have found a gentleman fond of cooking & food. Unfortunately that was not the case.

Food (cooking) is an artistic expression of your self. At this time you think that you are doing this for the gentleman but after a short while you will learn to appreciate your food & to be proud of any & all of your artistic creations.

I can recommend a book that covers all the main recipes for whatever occassion; & it is quite simple. All that you have to do is learn to read your selected recipes carefully & to follow instructions. Here it is:

How to cook Everything; Simple Recipes for Great Food, Mark Bittman, 1998.
