ISO: Dill/Sweet Pickles

Misc.
My mother in law used to make sweet pickles by using those really big jars of dill pickles and turning them upside down but I don't remember the vinegar in them. I have been looking for this recipe forever. Have you ever made them w/o the vinegar or do you think you have to use it?
Thanks
