ISO: need help for daughters first birthday cake decorating

need help. I am going to attempt to make my daughters first birthday cake and i would like to make a tower cake or sheet cake with pink buttercream icing and have different size white fondant dots all over it with her monogram in the middle- could someone offer suggestions on how to go about doing this (DECORATING) i have all of the recipes for cake and buttercream icing im just not sure about the fondant doing what i want it to do and what do i need to buy to write her initials on the cake with?
