How to: food photography?

Misc.

I would like to be able to take good quality pictures of the cakes and other food items I prepare. These would be great to show potential clients. I have a standard 35 mm camera with auto focus, auto flash, the usual.

Does anyone have any helpful hints on taking good photographs of food? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I could not afford to hire a professional photographer!
