The one thing I have always hated about making boston brown bread is the steaming process. Luckly, about 15 years ago I found a wonderful recipe that did not require the bread to be steamed and I have used it ever since. Let me know if you like it also.

BOSTON BROWN BREAD

1 1/2 c. raisins
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. brown sugar
1 round TB shortening
1 teas. molasses
1 egg
1 teas. salt
2 2/3 cup sifted flour (I do not sift)
2 teas. baking soda
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Pour water over raisins and let cool. Cream brown sugar, shortening, egg. and molasses.

Add dry ingredients and raisins with liquid. Mix well. Add nuts. Bake at 350 degrees in 4 greased size #2 soup cans for 1 hour or till done. Fill cans only 2/3 full otherwise ithe sbatter will run over. Let cool in cans for 10 min.
