Request: How to use a bamboo steamer?

We got a bamboo steamer for christmas, and I don't have a clue how to use it. I hope someone here is able to give me step-by-step instructions and also hints on how to take good care of it.

Also, recipies would be greatly appreciated, as we love the steamed dishes they serve in chinese restaurants and chim sum places but unfortunately my home cooking skills are more for preparing gravy & mashed potatoes type stuff...
